Esbelli" is the name of a district in
Urgup, Cappadocia, which is famous for its beautiful old cave houses.
Esbelli Evi is an exquisitely restored eight bedroom pension in this
area.
This could be the worlds classiest cave. Behind the facade of a
splendid old stone mansion lies a labyrinth of hidden courtyards
where the eight rooms of the Esbelli House are carved into
Cappadocias volcanic rock. The Honeymoon Room, with antique brass
bed, occupies a real fairy chimney.
Rooms:
Original features of this collection
of village houses have been retained, and the rock-cut rooms are
tastefully furnished with period furniture, and heated by wood-burning
fires in winter. The atmosphere is less that of a hotel than a
guesthouse. You e invited to help yourself from the fridge in the
kitchen, cook a meal, and sit in a communal sitting room, listening
to classical and jazz CDs
Amenities:
The style is attentive, measured and perfectionist.
Suha Ersoz, a lawyer and a fastidious bachelor, likes to treat
customers as his personal guests. Only a tiny name plate gives an
outward sign of his hotel. A rich CD collection (Bach, Couperin,
Gorecki, and some jazz) stands at guests disposal in the common room,
as does a refrigerator in the kitchen well stocked with liquor. The
guest book gushes with praise from Ankaras diplomatic community-a
half dozen ambassadors have placed their names (along such names as
Erich von Daniken) among devotees of this unique establishment.
The name of the house refers to the section of old Urgup where most
dwellings are cut into the cliff; possibly a corruption of the Greek
spileo, "cave". There is a striking view from here with half of
Cappadocia under your feet.
